چکیده
Five fields located close to the center of the globular cluster NGC 104=47 Tuc were surveyed in a search for variable stars. We present V -band light curves for 42 variables. This sample includes 13 RR Lyr stars – 12 of them belong to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and 1 is a background object from the galactic halo. Twelve eclipsing binaries were identified – 9 contact systems and 3 detached/semi-detached systems. Seven eclipsing binaries are located in the blue straggler region on the cluster color-magnitude diagram (CMD) and four binaries can be considered main-sequence systems. One binary is probably a member of the SMC. Eight contact binaries are likely members of the cluster and one is most probably a foreground star. We show that for the surveyed region of 47 Tuc, the relative frequency of contact binaries is very low as compared with other recently surveyed globular clusters. The sample of identified variables also includes 15 red variables with periods ranging from about 2 days to several weeks. A large fraction of these 15 variables probably belong to the SMC but a few stars are likely to be red giants in 47 Tuc. V I photometry for about 50 000 stars from the cluster fields was obtained as a by product of our survey. 1

A Lack of Planets in 47 Tucanae from an HST Search
We report results from a large Hubble Space Telescope project to observe a significant (∼34,000) ensemble of main sequence stars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae with a goal of defining the frequency of inner-orbit, gas-giant planets. Simulations based on the characteristics of the 8.3 days of time-series data in the F555W and F814W WFPC2 filters show that ∼17 planets should be detected by ph...

متن کاملNumerical wave optics and the lensing of gravitational waves by globular clusters
We consider the possible effects of gravitational lensing by globular clusters on gravitational waves from asymmetric neutron stars in our galaxy. In the lensing of gravitational waves, the long wavelength, compared with the usual case of optical lensing, can lead to the geometrical optics approximation being invalid, in which case a wave optical solution is necessary. In general, wave optical ...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Evolution of the dust mass loss with luminosity along the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc Abstract. The present paper investigates the properties of the dust mass loss in stars populating the giant branch of the globular cluster 47 Tuc, by combining ISOCAM and DENIS data. Raster maps of 5 fields covering areas ranging from 4 × 4 to 15 × 15 arcmin 2 at diff...
متن کاملThe Relative Age of the Thin and Thick Galactic Disks
We determine the relative ages of the open cluster NGC 188 and selected Hipparcos field stars by isochrone fitting, and compare them to the age of the thick disk globular cluster 47 Tuc. The best fit age for NGC 188 was determined to be 6.5 ±1.0 Gyr. The solar metallicity Hipparcos field stars yielded a slightly older thin disk age, 7.5 ±0.7 Gyr. Two slightly metal-poor ([Fe/H] = −0.22) field s...
